Carlinhos Brown was the first who used the Timba in the 1980s as a frame drum in his group Timbalada and thus a musical revolution in Salvador Bahia triggered. The Timba was a formative tool of Samba reggae and the Bloco afros. Until then, the Atabaque was the dominant Brazilian frame drum, is but too heavy to wear them, and therefore not in the carnival groups was played. Until today, the Timba has no input into the Samba-enredo the big samba schools of Rio de Janeiro found, play an important role but in groups that combine traditional with modern music.
