Yoruba religions identifies different Brazilian religions of African origin. These include candomblé, whose main area of distribution in Bahía is located, the Shango cult in northeastern Brazil, Batuque in the Southeast and the spiritistisch influenced umbanda. The various religions have many similarities and are often grouped together under the term Macumba.
These religions have their origins in the era of slavery. Often they form a syncretic synthesis of African (especially Yoruba), European and remnants also native American religion.
