João Ubaldo Ribeiro was born in 1941, on the island of Itaparica in the Brazilian State of Bahia. Since 1957, he worked as a journalist and studied law at the University of Bahia began a year later. In 1964, a Masters scholarship for political science, he entered the United States. João Ubaldo Ribeiro has published numerous books, including those in German translated novels Viva o Povo Brasileiro (Brazil, Brazil) and O Sorriso do Lagarto (the smile of the lizard), numerous anthologies with short stories and children's book. 2009 he was awarded for his work the Prémio Camões, the most important literary prize of the Portuguese-speaking world. Since 1994, João Ubaldo Ribeiro is a member of the academia Brasileira de Letras. He writes regular columns for two of the most important Brazilian newspapers O Globo and O Estado de São Paulo.
