The Cagarras Islands (in Portuguese) Ilhas Cagarras) are a group of 7 Islands and rocks (Lage da Cagarra, Cagarra, Filhote da Cagarra, Matias, Praça onze, Comprida and Las Palmas) on the southern coast of the city Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, outside the Bay of Guanabara.
History
There is no consensus about the origin of the name. The opinion that the name comes from the large amount of excrement that left the local sea birds on the Islands is most common. By the rich calcium-rich feces, the Islands are white. An alternative theory traces the name of the Islands to the there-based, "cagarra" mentioned in Portuguese, Shearwater of Calonectris species.
1730, the island Cagarra on a chart named "Ilha Cagade" franzosisierten will appear. On a further map of 1767, same island is named her Portuguese name "Ilha Cagarra".
